Barley news Mercosur: South America’s import needs of malting barley estimated at 1.1 mln tonnes

The Buenos Aires Grain Exchange and private barley crop estimates range from 3.8 to 4.0 mln tonnes, but the Argentinean Ministry of Agriculture issued an estimate of 4.6 mln tonnes, up 23% from last year. However, frost damage in the Buenos Aires province has affected the yield and quality potential, H. M. Gauger GmbH said in their December report.

The analysts’ barley supply & demand guesstimate for Argentina is: crop 4.0 mln tonnes, domestic use 1.05 mln tonnes, export licences granted to 1.136 mln tonnes of feed and 0.311 mln tonnes of malting barley; open balance is seen at 1.5 mln tonnes.

Total South American import needs of malting barley are estimated at 1.1 mln tonnes.

New crop export quotes for Argentinean barley are: feed USD 215,- malting 270,- per tonne.

Brazil harvested approximately 3.0 mln tonnes of barley, of which only 60% selectable malting barley. The balance shows malting needs at 840,000 tonnes, domestic supply at 175,000, imports at 665,000 tonnes.

Uruguay fared better: the country’s crop is estimated at 600,000 tonnes, malting selection at 80%, which is equal to around 470,000 tonnes vs. domestic malting needs of 480,000 tonnes.
